About this Page

This page has information about the Martial Art of Tae Kwon Do. I am currently is a 1st Degree Blackbelt, and also am an instructor trainee for the National Progressive Taekwondo association.

A Brief History of Tae Kwon Do

Taekwondo (also written "tae kwon do", or "taekwon-do") is a modern self-defense martial art from Korea that is characterised by its fast, high and spinning kicks.
The Modern Art of Tae Kwon Do was started April 11, 1955. After the Korean War, South Korea's President,Syngman Rhee ordered that the various schools unify under a single system. The name "TaeKwon-Do" was submitted by General Choi, a general of South Korea. It was unanimously accepted accepted by a governmental body. General Choi is known for unifying and organizing Taekwondo, and is considered the Father of Taekwondo.

What is the NPTA
The National Progressive Taekwondo Association, (NPTA), was founded in 1992 by Master Instructor Dan Perry. With the philosophy that there is good technique to be found in all forms of Martial Art, his vision is to create strong community leaders through professional Martial Art instruction. Currently a 6th Degree Black Belt Master Instructor under GrandMaster Kang Rhee (Memphis, TN), Master Perry has over 35 years of Martial Arts experience.
About NPTA does
Headquartered in Springfield, MO, the NPTA is one of the fastest growing Martial Arts Associations in the country. The NPTA's primary art is the traditional Chon-Hon form system of Taekwondo, with a National Registry maintained for all NPTA members. The NPTA is a progressive-minded organization, so cross-training is encouraged. Each NPTA school may offer training in other Martial Arts, depending on the expertise of the instructor. However, the primary ranking system for each NPTA school is, and always will be, the traditional Chon-Hon form system.
About the Independent Taekwondo Club
The Independent Taekwondo Club, under the direction of Mr. Duane Harbaugh, 2nd Degree, has been affiliated with the NPTA since the summer of 2006. In that time, operating out of Wesley United Methodist Church, ITC has tripled in size, and continues to grow. Mr. Harbaugh and his students have become an integral part of the NPTA, including hosting testings and special events. Most recently, Mr Harbaugh was named the 2007 Instructor of the Year for the NPTA.
